What does "Arirang" mean? (BTS ARIRANG meaning in English)
"Arirang" is the name of Korea's most famous folk song, and the word has no single agreed English translation. Yonhap reported that experts count some 40 theories on where the song comes from. "Beautiful beloved" is a popular fan reading, but it's only one theory, not a dictionary definition.
- The folk song: UNESCO describes Arirang as a song built on a repeated refrain plus two simple lines that vary by region. It counts about 60 versions and some 3,600 variations. UNESCO added it to its cultural heritage list twice: South Korea's entry in 2012 and North Korea's in 2014.
- Why BTS chose it: BIGHIT MUSIC said the song, "transcending time and generations," has long been tied to "emotions of connection, distance, and reunion," according to Billboard. The Korea Times reported that the title reflects BTS's identity as "artists who began in Korea."
- Where it shows up on the album: Complex reported that "Body to Body" builds a hip-hop beat around a pansori-style Arirang melody (pansori is a traditional Korean form of musical storytelling).
BTS ARIRANG meaning of each song: what's been said
We only list what BIGHIT, the members or major outlets have said. Lyrics aren't reproduced here.
- Body to Body: The opener. Rolling Stone UK describes Arirang motifs with traditional percussion and choral elements.
- Hooligan: Strings and clashing-blade sounds, with soft vocals traded against harder rap, according to Complex and Rolling Stone UK.
- FYA: A jersey club beat from Diplo, Flume and JPEGMAFIA, per Complex.
- 2.0: Its music video, released April 2 (KST), pays homage to the hallway fight in Park Chan-wook's film Oldboy (Soompi). The video is nominated for Best Music Video at MAMA 2026.
- No. 29: A recording of the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok, which is South Korea's National Treasure No. 29 and was cast in 771. In BTS's track commentary, RM said the track runs as long as the bell takes to fade out (Gulf News).
- SWIM: RM wrote the lyrics. BIGHIT calls it an up-tempo alternative pop track that "captures the resolve to keep swimming at one's own pace through the surging currents" (Sports Kyunghyang).
- Merry Go Round: Rolling Stone UK calls it melancholic and synth-led. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala co-produced it.
- Like Animals: Sweeping crescendos and grungy guitar, per Rolling Stone UK.
- they don't know 'bout us: Complex calls it the most personal track: it's about how BTS have been mythologized and their wish to be seen as just seven people.
- Into the Sun: Rolling Stone UK describes a euphoric closer with falsetto harmonies.
- Aliens, NORMAL, One More Night, Please: We haven't found an official explanation of these yet. "NORMAL" did get a music video, which premiered on Spotify on July 17 and came to YouTube on July 19.
