What BTS: The Return covers
The film follows BTS from the end of their military service through the making of ARIRANG, their first full-length album since all seven members finished South Korea's mandatory service. AP, NME and Korea JoongAng Daily describe these threads:
- The reunion: it opens with all seven members logging into a livestream from a beach, after nearly four years without full-group activity.
- Military service: head shaves, uniforms and discharge footage. RM says he "learned to hustle" in the military.
- Living together in LA: the members share a house in Los Angeles while recording in summer 2025. Jin misses early sessions because he was finishing his solo tour.
- The songwriting fights: work with producers including Diplo and Pdogg, debates over how much English belongs on "Normal," and doubts about "Swim" as the lead single (Suga and RM backed it).
- The business side: meetings with label executives about the concept and the choice of single, plus talk of K-pop's "seven-year curse."
- Downtime: swimming, volleyball, late dinners over soju, and self-shot camcorder footage that the director compares to home video.
NME notes there are "no formal interviews." You hear the members in snatches during downtime instead, often in cars on the way to and from the studio. To follow along with the songs, see our ARIRANG tracklist.
Where to watch BTS: The Return
Netflix is the only legitimate place to watch it. Netflix released it worldwide, so you need an active Netflix subscription. It isn't on YouTube, Weverse or Disney+, and it isn't playing in theaters. "Watch free" uploads on video-sharing sites are unofficial copies. The official trailer is on Netflix Tudum.
BTS: The Return reviews
As of October 13, 2026, the film holds 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from 15 critic reviews. Most critics praised the access and honesty, and a few wished it went deeper.
- NME (Rhian Daly): a fly-on-the-wall look at a band at a creative crossroads. Daly called the journey "thoroughly intriguing."
- Rolling Stone (Jae-Ha Kim): "the director doesn't present a sanitized version of their story," including management meetings where art and business don't line up.
- The New York Times (Brandon Yu): "as polished as you would expect of a work about a pop behemoth." Yu found it more a sentimental welcome-back than a revelation.
- LAist FilmWeek (Christy Lemire): said it "gets close to some subversive and thought-provoking stuff but shies away."
- Korea JoongAng Daily (Kim Ji-ye): focuses less on spectacle and more on the pressure of the comeback, and it shows the members as relatable people.
Bottom line: if you want concert footage, start with the live special below. If you want to see how ARIRANG got made and how the members handled the pressure, this is the one.
